AI providers

Add your team's OpenAI or Claude API key so Tillage can draft quote and invoice line items with AI, and know what data is sent.

Tillage’s AI drafting uses your own OpenAI or Anthropic (Claude) account. You add an API key once for your team, and everyone on the team can draft line items with it. Usage is billed by OpenAI or Anthropic to your account, not by Tillage.

This page covers the keys. For drafting itself, see AI quote drafts.

Add a key

  1. Get a key:
  2. In Tillage, go to Team Settings → AI.
  3. Under AI Services, paste it into OpenAI API Key or Claude API Key. You can add both.
  4. Save your team settings.

Once a key is saved, the field shows Key configured — enter new key to replace. To change it, paste a new key over it.

You can also add a key the first time you use AI drafting. If no key is set, the dialog shows AI Setup Required with fields for both keys and a Save & Continue button.

Choose a provider and model

You pick the provider each time you draft, in the Generate Quote with AI dialog:

  • AI Provider: OpenAI or Claude. OpenAI is selected by default.
  • Model: the model to use from that provider. The defaults are GPT-4.1 Mini for OpenAI and Claude Sonnet 4.5 for Claude.
Provider Models offered
OpenAI GPT-4.1 Mini, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 Nano, GPT-4o, GPT-4o Mini, o3 Mini, o4 Mini, GPT-5, GPT-5 Mini
Claude Claude Sonnet 4.5, Claude Opus 4.1, Claude Haiku 4.5, Claude Sonnet 4, Claude Opus 4, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Claude 3.5 Haiku

Your OpenAI or Anthropic account must have access to the model you choose. If a request fails, try another model or check the key’s permissions and billing in that provider’s console.

What’s sent to the provider

When you draft line items, Tillage sends the provider:

  • Your project description and any prompt template you chose
  • The Pricing Tier you picked, such as Mid-Market or Non-Profit
  • The client’s company name, industry, size, business type, website and address
  • The primary contact’s name, email and title
  • Your business’s industry
  • When adding to an existing quote, the line items already on it

The provider’s own data policies apply to what you send. Leave sensitive details out of project descriptions if you’d rather not share them.

How keys are stored

  • Keys are encrypted before they’re stored.
  • They’re used only on Tillage’s servers and never sent to your browser in full.
  • They’re shared by everyone on the team. Anyone who can draft quotes can use them.

To stop Tillage using a key, revoke it in the OpenAI Platform or Anthropic Console. That takes effect immediately.

Troubleshooting

  • “API key not configured”: no key is saved for the provider you chose. Add one in Team Settings → AI, or switch provider.
  • “AI generation failed”: the provider rejected the request. Common causes are a revoked key, no billing set up with the provider, or no access to the chosen model.
