Stripe
Choose between a new Express account and your existing Stripe account, and see what Tillage does in Stripe on your behalf.
Tillage takes online payments through Stripe. You either connect a Stripe account you already have or let Tillage create a Stripe Express account for you. This page explains the difference, what Tillage does in your Stripe account, and what to expect from payouts.
For the step-by-step connection, see Set up payments.
Express or your existing account
When you click Connect with Stripe in Team Settings → Payments, Tillage asks you to Choose Your Payment Processing Setup:
| Connect Existing | Set Up Express | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | You already use Stripe | Getting started fast |
| Setup | Connect through Stripe’s sign-in (OAuth) | About 5 minutes, managed through Tillage |
| Where data lives | Your own Stripe account | A new Express account just for Tillage |
| History in Stripe | Full transaction and customer history | Simplified Express view |
| Saved payment methods | Yes | Yes |
| Platform fee | 1% | 1% |
| Monthly cost | $0 | $0 |
Both options cost the same. Choose based on where you want your payment data to live.
Choose Connect Existing if:
- You already bill clients through Stripe and want new payments alongside your history.
- You plan to import Stripe subscriptions, so clients’ saved cards keep working.
- You want Stripe’s full dashboard, reports and settings.
Choose Set Up Express if you don’t have Stripe yet. Stripe walks you through verifying your business and adding a bank account, and Tillage turns on your country’s bank debit method for you.
If you start on Express, the payments page later offers Connect Your Existing Stripe Account so you can move to an account you fully own.
What Tillage does in your Stripe account
Tillage acts on your connected account only to bill your clients:
- Creates payments for invoices your clients pay, auto-pay charges and payments you run with Process Payment. Payments are made on your connected account, so they appear in your Stripe Dashboard.
- Collects the platform fee as a Stripe application fee on each online payment: 1%, capped at $50. Stripe’s processing fee is charged by Stripe as usual.
- Creates and links Stripe customers for clients who pay online, and saves payment methods when clients choose to.
- Issues refunds when you click Issue Refund in Tillage.
- Reads payment events from Stripe to mark invoices paid, processing or failed.
- Reads customers, invoices and subscriptions when you run a Stripe import, and, only if you confirm, sets imported subscriptions to cancel at the end of their period.
Tillage doesn’t change your Stripe pricing, payout schedule on an existing account, or products.
Payment methods
Clients can pay by card on any account. Bank transfers use your country’s local bank debit where Stripe supports one: ACH in the US, pre-authorized debit in Canada, Bacs in the UK, BECS in Australia and New Zealand, and SEPA in eurozone countries. On an existing account, turn the method on in your Stripe Dashboard under Settings → Payment methods. See Send an invoice and get paid.
Payouts
Stripe pays out to the bank account on your Stripe account. You’ll find payout details in Stripe; click Manage in Stripe on the payments page to open it.
For new Express accounts, Tillage adds some protection while the account builds a track record:
- Payouts start once Tillage has reviewed the account.
- After that, payouts are held for 7 days.
- Once the account is at least 30 days old, has three successful payments and has no disputes or bank returns, payouts move to Stripe’s standard schedule.
On a new Express account, bank transfers over $5,000 are also blocked until it reaches the same 30-day and three-payment mark.
Stripe can also hold payouts while it needs information from you. When that happens, the payments page shows Complete Your Setup or Past Due Requirements with a Complete in Stripe Dashboard button.
Disconnect Stripe
- Go to Team Settings → Payments.
- Click Disconnect and confirm.
This turns off payment processing for your team: clients can’t pay online and you can’t send invoices until you reconnect. Your Stripe account stays active and your data stays in Stripe. Tillage won’t disconnect while a payout is pending or a payment is still processing.
